Yes, Virginia…actions DO speak louder than words.

And if Tuesday’s city council meeting is any indications of “council unity” and council “courtesies”, then there is trouble in paradise.

Councilman Rev. James Green made a simple request to delay a vote on a just introduced amendment by Councilman James Flurry to an ordinance. The amendment was made Tuesday A.M. after the Monday work session.

This was the first request by Green for a vote delay since this council first convened on Dec. 29.

Green had accommodated every request by every council member for vote delays.

And there had been many, as in very many.

In fact councilman John Nickelson has been called by many observers “Mr. Delay.”

Nickelson has made more motions for delay than all the other members together. He even delayed approval of the mayor’s appointments to city positions.

Initially the reaction by the other council member was negative, as in very negative.

Levette Fuller, who has called out Green in the past, initially pushed for a vote.  She questioned Green on what questions he had.  

Flurry, who has also tangled with Green, asked for a vote on Tuesday. Unfortunately, there have been more than one ugly exchanges between the two at council meetings.

Even Willie Bradford, who has voted for numerous delays, was initially opposed to a delay. This despite Bradford’s constant pleas for council unity.

Grayson Boucher was initially opposed. Thankfully he re-thought his opposition.

Boucher then made a very positive statement for a delay. And it carried the day—the vote was delayed 2 weeks

Goodness, what about all the talk of cohesiveness, cooperation and unity?
