THE MECHANICS OF A RECALL PETITION/ELECTION

It has been reported that an attempt to recall Councilwoman Levette Fuller will soon be initiated. Here is a brief summary of the procedure:

1. The recall petition must be personally signed by 33 1/3 per cent of the registered voters in District B. Currently there are 16,052 voters in this district. Thus a petition would need to be signed by 5345 voters. (The actual number will be determined by the voter registration on the day the petition is filed.)

2. The petition with signatures must be filed within 180 days after a petition to request that an election be called and held in the voting area (district B) for the purpose of recalling an elected official.

3. The registrar of voters will have 15 working days to certify the number of voters in District B and the number of actual voters of district B that signed the petition.

4. The petition "shall contain a clear statement of the reason or reasons for the recall."

5. If the registrar of voters certifies that the recall petition has the requisite signatures, the governor must call a recall election, which is to be held on the next specified election date.

6. The recall ballot will read: FOR the recall of Fuller

AGAINST the recall of Fuller

7. In this instance Fuller will only be recalled if a majority of voters cast their vote “FOR recall”.
