It was an adventure and a memorable one at that.
I delivered 12 meals to seniors on Thanksgiving Day.
The Caddo Council on Aging, Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, Grace CDC, Bergeron's Restaurant, Down Home Meats, Piccadilly Cafeteria, Craig Events and Caddo Commissioner Steven Jackson teamed to prepare and then deliver meals to over 1,200 households.
My list had five addresses in the Martin Luther King area. My car visited Hazel, Edson and Peach streets and Shreveport-Blanchard Highway.
Needless to say, I had never traveled to those locations. And I learned the hard way that directions on my iPhone are not the best.
My delivery route from Mt. Canaan to completion in MLK took almost two hours and 40 miles.
The final drop-off on West 69th was the easiest.
Next year I will be better prepared.
Like go to the bathroom before leaving home.
Expect a wait of 30 minutes in the car line to get the meals.
Have my car gas tank filled.
Leave home with a fully charged cell phone.
Eat beforehand and take a snack. (The pleasant aroma of 12 meals in the car made me very hungry.)
I was tempted to take a peek at the meals but decided my hunger pains could cause major challenges while viewing the food.
I enjoyed my travels and discoveries along the way. I was graciously thanked in person, through closed doors and by phone. (I called and advised people the meals were at their door.)
When I was almost home, I was called by the Hazel Street lady. She thanked me again profusely. She also said her meal was fantastic, but no pumpkin pie or cranberry sauce.
I told her that with so many meals, the kitchen must have run out. I assured her next year I would do better.
I am still wondering if she was pulling my leg or not.
I hope meals for seniors will be provided next Thanksgiving. I plan on repeating this rewarding experience..
