SETTLE TALK: To be vaccinated, or not to be vaccinated?

That is the question.

As one can guess, I am referring to the COVID vaccine.

If you have not been asked, get ready.

Undoubtedly, this will be the question of the day, the week, the month and probably for next year as well: to vaccinate or not to vaccinate?

So how do I decide on what could be a life decision?

I have been a regular flu shot “taker” for years. I also regularly submit to a tetanus shot, the pneumonia shot, the shingles shot, and about every other preventive health-care injection my doctor recommends.

For years I took a weekly allergy injection. So it’s fair to say that I am not “anti-injection.”

I can still remember getting the polio vaccine as a teenager at church.

Recent blood tests revealed COVID antibodies in my blood.

This means that my bedridden fatigue and body aches with loss of appetite over a protracted Fourth of July was evidently COVID rather than heat exhaustion and prostration.

My daughter, my son-in-law and my daughter-in-law have had COVID. One of
my staff members has also suffered from COVID.

I know many people who have had very serious bouts with COVID that required hospitalizations. Fortunately, I do not personally know any person who has died of COVID – or, better put, that I know COVID was the cause of death.

So, it’s not like I am obvious to the reality of this pandemic.

Know that due to my age that I am in a higher risk category than those under the
age of 60.

I have read that COVID can re-occur after having this disease.

So, am I going to take the vaccine? Honestly, I do not know as of this date.

For good or bad, I understand that the vaccination priorities will give me several weeks, probably months, to make this decision.

When/if my doctor suggests I get the COVID vaccination, I will make this decision.

Until then, I try to deal on issues that are present tense and somewhat under my control.
