The Caddo Commission will fill the District 6 Commission seat resulting from Lynn Cawthorne's resignation on Mon. Nov. 29 at a special 3:30 p.m. meeting.
The new interim commissioner will be a Jones, either Steffon or Hersey.
Four applications were sent to Commission clerk Jeff Everson by deadline of Friday, Nov. 26.
One candidate lives out of the district.
Another candidate, Ernest Baylor Jr., may not qualify. Baylor's homestead exemption is not in the district; his voter registration is a district address.
Baylor served in the Louisiana House of Representatives for 12 years. He later ran again for the House and was defeated, finishing third behind Barbara Norton and Lynn Cawthorne. He has also served as Caddo/Bossier Port Commissioner.
Steffon Jones applied for District 6 seat when Lindora Baker resigned in 2015. The Commission selected Lynn Cawthorne to fill her unexpired term.
Steffon ran against Cawthorne in the 2019 general election. He came in second in a three person race.
Steffon is currently is employed as the maintenance supervisor for SPORTRAN. He also serves as the senior pastor of the New Morning Glory Baptist Temple in Mansfield.
Hersey Jones did not list any current employement in his application.He is an ordained Baptist minister and serves as an assistant to the minister of Midway Missionary Baptist Church # 2.
Hersey has previously served on the Shreveport Airport Authoirty Board. He ran unsuccessly for Shreveport mayor in 2010 and for Caddo Sheriff in 2019.
The commission will also vote on the term of the interim appointment. A special election can be called to full Cawthorne's unexpired term in Mar. of next year. In that event the Commission would bear 100% of the costs of the election.
In the alternative, the Commission can set the election for the Nov. 2022 general primary. In that event the Commission's would bear 50% of the election costs.
