MURAL PROJECT IN ALLENDALE SPONSORED BY SHREVEPORT RACE / DIVERSITY COMMISSION
The Shreveport Commission on Race and Cultural Diversity is now beginning to engage in community-based projects.
The first is mural to be painted on the wall of the Galilee Stewart-Belle Stadium.
The stadium was the formerly known as SPAR Stadium, and it was the home of the Class AA Texas League Shreveport Captains.
The Captains last played in this venue in 1985 before moving to Fair Grounds Field.
The stadium was donated by the city of Shreveport to Galilee Baptist Church after the opening of the now-closed Fair Grounds Field.
The field is named after local baseball greats Riley Stewart and Albert Belle.
It is located behind the Galilee Family Center.
Starting this week the Commission began bringing artists and Allendale community members together in an effort to create a mural on the wall of the stadium.
The project is intended to shed light on the history of the Allendale community and its impact on Shreveport.
The mural painting is scheduled for June 12, 19 and 26.
Artists who will work on this project include Eric Francis, Whitney Tates, Katherine Owens, KaDavien Baylor and Rebecca Thomas.
The Commission is funded by private donations.
