NEW SHREVEPORT AIRPORT DIRECTOR HAS MAJOR CHALLENGES, INCLUDING LACK OF TRANSPARENCY

Stephanie Tucker was confirmed by the Shreveport City Council as the director of the Shreveport Airport Authority (SAA) on Tuesday, July 13.

She has many challenges in her new job.

Tucker advised the SAA Board that she had four priorities as the interim director, which was her position at the time.

She listed these as infrastructure upgrades, employee engagement, customer service and economic stability.

Tucker should add to these priorities full compliance with the Louisiana Open Meetings Law and the Louisiana Public Records Act. The SAA has a horrible track record of compliance with these two fundamental laws that ensure open government.

Additionally, the SAA does not have any rules of procedure or bylaws. This is another example of the Wild West mentality of the SAA board members and prior SAA directors.

Tucker has a law degree.

Two of her board members are attorneys.

Another is a former eight-year city councilman who was a stickler for following rules and laws when on the council.

The other two directors have many years of service and were on the board during several complaints filed for non-compliance with the Open Meetings Law and Public Records Law, including one filed with the Louisiana Attorney General's Office.

Simply put, there are no valid excuses for non-compliance by Tucker and/or her board.

Additionally, the meetings should be streamed and a video posted. The airport conference room is not a convenient venue for meetings nor a meeting time of 10 a.m.

If Tucker follows in the footsteps of several airport directors who poorly performed their duties and did not have long tenures, she should realize that the public has little patience for more shenanigans at the airport.

Simply put, time is not on Tucker's side. Transparency should be her number one goal.
