Does District E really want Alan Jackson on the city council?

Alan Jackson is a run-off candidate for the Shreveport City Council District E.

Jackson is a novice in the political world, and it certainly shows by what he has and has not done since his December appointment last year.

While serving this year as an interim appointed council representative, he committed numerous ethical violations for an elected official which have been reported in Settle Talk columns.

Seemingly, he has not realized that, once serving in a political office, you sacrifice a portion of your personal life. That means what you (and your family) do outside the council chambers is subject to review by the general public, and especially your constituents.

Jackson has posted endorsements of Shreveport council members James Green and Tabatha Taylor. He also has the endorsement of Caddo Commissioner Steven Jackson and Caddo School Board member Terrance Vinson.

While on the council, Jackson has posted on social media many pictures that obviously are reflective of his personal values.

His wife has posted many pictures on social media that obviously are reflective of both her personal values and her husband’s.

Every person is entitled to a personal life and the opportunity to share it with others on social media. However, a government official should use substantial discretion simply because he is a government official.

Jackson was Adrian Perkins’ recommendation to Gov. John Bel Edwards for the appointment.

Jackson will only return to the council if the voters of District E select him. Hopefully, they will review his record in office and the values he has, along with those of his wife, as reflected in social media posts.

The role of the media is to inform citizens of facts. That is the purpose of this column.
