DOES THE CADDO COMMISSION REALLY NEED TO FUND MURALS FOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE?

JOHN E. SETTLE JR

Each year the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce has a Leadership Program.

In recent years the Leadership Program has adopted a community service project  to contribute back to the Shreveport Community.

The recent class wants to implement a public art project at the intersection of Marshall Street and I-20.

Specifically the public art will be murals on the 26 pillars undergirding the Marshall Street I-20 underpass.

The Leadership Class has made a funding request of $6 thousand to the Caddo Commission.

Without regard to the merits of he mural project, the hard question to be asked why public funding? Specifically why public funding for a Chamber of Commerce project by the Caddo Commission.

In the financial scheme of the Commission budget the $6 thousand request is barely a drop in the proverbial bucket.

But back to the threshold question of why fund a Chamber project?

This request was on the agenda for the Commission's April 21 meeting. It was continued because the it did not have the requisite votes for passage.

The Commission will consider this funding request at its next meeting on Thurs. May 5.
