TODAY'S SHREVEPORT TIMES FRONT PAGE REMINISCENT OF "DEWEY BEATS TRUMAN" HEADLINES

The surprise of election of Harry Truman as president in 1948 defeating New York Gov. Thomas Dewey is remembered for the major press headline mistakes.

The New York Times, The Chicago Daily Tribune and many other newspapers falsely printed as front page headlines that Dewey had defeated Truman.

Today's Shreveport Times front page headline reads "Johnson's Bid for House Speaker Falls Short."

Greg Hilburn, one of the state's most respected columnists, is the author of the column.

The Shreveport Times is owned by Gannett, which owns over 200 papers nationwide. IT is unknown how many of these ran this false headline and news story.
