The current Shreveport City Council took office on Dec. 31 of last year.
Since taking office this council has not had any real controversial items on its agenda.
Until now, as in an upcoming vote at its next meeting on Tuesday, May 23.
On this day, the council will consider an amendment to the smoke-free ordinance to allow smoking in some inside casino areas.
The amendment is sponsored by Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor and Councilman Gary Brooks.
Taylor's district includes the Shreveport riverfront, and the rest of downtown is in Brooks' district.
The proposed amendment has drawn loud opposition by the smoke-free community.
To date, almost all council votes have been unanimous, with no real division among the council members.
But don't count on that Tuesday.
Council members Grayson Boucher and Jim Taliaferro have publicly stated opposition to the smoking amendment.
Historically, Councilman James Green has voted with Taylor. His position on this vote is unknown at this writing.
Councilwoman Ursula Bowman advised she is still researching the issue. Her husband, former councilmember Jerry Bowman Jr., works for Oschner.
The position of Councilman Alan Jackson is unknown at this writing.
Presumably, Taylor and Brooks will vote to amend the smoke-free ordinance.
If the council does approve the amendment, then the political focus will bounce over to the mayor's office to see if Mayor Tom Arceneaux will veto the ordinance.
Mayor Tom has had many hot issues to deal with since his election, and this fire will certainly be one of the hottest if the amendment hits his desk.
A mayoral veto can be overridden by five council votes.
Stay tuned.
