At a noon press conference today (Fri.) Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator he would NOT seek re-election as sheriff in this years election.
Here is a summary of his comments:
1. He had a heart stint on Mon. June 19 at Baylor and came back to a Homeland Security meeting at 10 a.m. on Tues.
2. He is now healthier than he has been in quite some time , works out regularly, and tries to eat healthy.
3. The heart incident lead him to reflect on "how much sand was left in the hour glass" and how he wanted to spend the rest of his days.
4. By law, he is still sheriff for another year, without regard to who is elected this year.
5. He intends to aggressively fulfill his duties as sheriff the next 12 month and will be more outspoken on the problems with the criminal justice system both state-wide and locally.
6. He has raised almost $500,000 and he will refund all his contributions. He had anticipated winning re-election by a 70% margin this fall.
7. He wants to remain active in the criminal justice system and law enforcement when his term ends.
8. He will endorse a "worthy" candidate who can further improve the Caddo Parish Sheriff office, and with six weeks remaining before qualifying he is hopeful a candidate worthy of his endorsement will quality.
9. He feels blessed to have been in law enforcement for over 50 years and to work with the Shreveport Police Department and the Caddo Sheriff Office.
10. His announcement is NOT a "good bye", there is much work to still be done in the next year, and then thereafter when he is no longer in office.
