SPD CHIEF SMITH BRIEFING ON YESTERDAY'S (Mon.) ACTIVE SHOOTER INCIDENT IN SOUTH SHREVEPORT

Shreveport Police Chief gave a detailed briefing today at 1:30 p.m. on yesterday’s active shooter incident.

Here is a summary:

1. SPD was assisted by SFD, BCPD, CPSO, BPSO, Desoto Parish Office, LSP, AFT, FBI, DEA, U.S. Marshall and Signal 51 group.

2. The shooter went to the residence in the 9400 block of Crooked Creek with an AR-15 type weapon and a drum of ammunition.

3. The shooter forced his way into the residence and all occupants escaped except a 13-year-old girl who hid.

4. Two neighbors engaged the shooter before he entered the residence in an effort to stop his actions.

One was shot, and is expected to fully recover.

5. The Bossier Police Department brought over their BEARKAT, an armed vehicle, and a ROOK, which is an armored critical incident vehicle. Both were used and very instrumental in the actions of SPD to mitigate the incident.

6. The shooter fired into a room where the girl had hidden, and she was struck by gunfire.

7. Three SPD officers entered the residence and while taking gunfire, rescued the young girl who is expected to recover from her gunshots.

8. SPD used 2 drones to survey the interior of the residence for planning purposes. The shooter shot/disabled both of these drones. The drones helped ID the location of the young girl.

9. Despite extended negotiation by the SPD negotiations team the shooter continued to stay in the barricaded residence and continued to fire on SPD, SFD, and other agencies on the scene.

10. The house caught on fire. It is believed the shooter started the fire.

11. SFD contained the fire, preventing its spread to the houses on each side.

12. SFD was able to distinguish the fire at the residence where shooter was located.

13. The shooter was found dead in the house--cause of death awaiting coroner's report.

14. This is an ongoing investigation, and more details will be released when available, including the names of all involved--the shooter, the injured neighbor and injured young girl and the 3 heroic SPD officers.

Mayor Tom Arceneaux opened the press conference, thanking all agencies involved and reminding citizens how NW Louisiana can come together in times of need.

More details to be released by SPD at later time.
