John came to Shreveport in January of 1977 when he was transferred to Barksdale AFB.

He’s been active in Shreveport politics since deciding to make Shreveport his home.

John practiced law for 40 years and he now monitors local politics. He regularly attends Shreveport City Council and Caddo Parish Commission meetings.

John is published weekly in The Inquisitor, bi-monthly in The Forum News, and frequently in the Shreveport Times.

ALL NW LA SALES TAXES ARE DOWN!

 Each of the 6 major NW LA sales taxing jurisdictions shows a decrease in its September 2024 sales taxes compared to 2023. The 3 Bossier entities reflect big declines while the 3 Caddo bodies have lesser drops.

The City of Shreveport has a 2.75% sales and use tax rate. Its September collections indicate $13,356,316 vs $14,236,166 last year. This represents a 6.2% fall.

Its year-to-date figure is 1.7% behind 2023 with total deposits of $108,536,750. Its 2023 9-month figure was $109,785,771. It follows a calendar fiscal year.

The Caddo Parish School Board levies a 1.5% rate of sales tax. It follows a July 1 thru June 30 fiscal year.

Its 3-month figure received is $26,882,189. In 2023, its tally was $27,827,623. In the initial quarter of its current fiscal year, it is thus 3.4% less than last year.

The Law Enforcement District of Caddo, that is, the sheriff, charges a 0.35% sales and use tax. It uses a calendar year in financial transactions. It reflects $2,034,085 in September collections. Its prior year September total was $2,172,395. This downturn is 5.4% behind last year. Its YTD sum of $18,674,487 is 4.2% under last year's YTD figure of $19,471,956.

Bossier City-Parish is running behind 2023. Using a calendar fiscal year, its receipts of $5,353,417 trail September 2023's $5,919,095 and are 9.6% behind.

Its YTD total of $55,552,761 lags the $60,609,048 a year back, representing an 8.3% YTD drop vs 2023.

The Bossier Parish School Board after 3 months of its present fiscal year is far below last year. It has September receipts of $5,546,506, 13.7% less than last year. Its fiscal quarter's $16,605,430 is 13.5% behind the $19,192,129 it deposited one year ago.

The Bossier Parish Police Jury follows a calendar fiscal year. Its September tally is $1,132,454 is a big 25% drop from last year's $1,510,424. Its YTD sum of $11,476,089 reflects a 17.8% decrease in comparison with the $13,958,811 in 2023's total.
