John came to Shreveport in January of 1977 when he was transferred to Barksdale AFB.

He’s been active in Shreveport politics since deciding to make Shreveport his home.

John practiced law for 40 years and he now monitors local politics. He regularly attends Shreveport City Council and Caddo Parish Commission meetings.

John is published weekly in The Inquisitor, bi-monthly in The Forum News, and frequently in the Shreveport Times.

ALL BUT ONE SALES TAXING ENTITY DOWN

The City of Shreveport deposited 1.5% more in October than a year ago. Its tally of $13,728,392 brings its YTD sum to $135,621,457, down 1.4% from 2023, when the 10-month collections were $137,551,546.

It uses the calendar year as its fiscal year and levies a 2.75% rate on its sales and use tax. It is the only NW LA entity to see a rise in this year's receipts vs last. 5 others fell.

The Caddo Parish School Board employs the July 1 to June 30 fiscal year mandated by LA law for all school boards. Its 4-month total of $36,023,157 lags 2023 by $1,050,768, or a 2.8% slip vs last year's first 4 months.

Its October figure, $9,140,966, is 1.1% below Oct 2023.

The Law Enforcement District of Caddo, the Sheriff, is running behind the prior year. It has a 0.35% rate and a calendar year fiscally. Its October sum, $2,131,665, falls 1.0% behind 2023. Its YTD receipts, $20,806,152, lag last year's $21,644,461 by $838,309, a 3.9% slide.

Bossier City-Parish continues below last year. Using a calendar fiscal year, its collections are $55,924,106, a 7.2% drop vs 2023, when it had garnered $60,281,528 in 10 months. Its October tally of $4,779,263 is a big 14.6% hit vs the $5,591,575 it collected a year before.

The Bossier Parish School Board stands 3.2% behind its 4-month figure a year ago, depositing $23,725,902 this year. Its October sum, $5,369,921, falls $959,370 less than its 2023 sum. This is a large drop of 15.2%.

The Bossier Parish Police Jury stands at $13,600,962 in its 10-month fiscal year total. Last year its figure in the like period was $15,526,830, a $1,925,868 decline, or 12.4%. Fractionally, its YTD figure is 7/8 of 2023's.
