June 19 is celebrated to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. Known as "Juneteenth", the word is a combination of the words "June" and nineteenth".
On June 19th, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the Civil War.
This Wednesday is a federal and state holiday. Local government offices will also be closed.
