SHOULD OPEN CONTAINERS BE ALLOWED IN RED RIVER DISTRICT/EXTENDED AREA DURING HUMOR & HARMONY FESTIVAL?

It’s a decision that will be before the Shreveport City Council at its meetings on Monday, July 8 and Tuesday, July 9.

Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor has introduced a resolution to suspend Shreveport ordinances relative to the sale, dispensing and consumption of alcoholic beverages in connection with the Humor & Harmony Festival from August 8 through August 11.  The area delineated in the resolution is "the Red River District extended West to Spring Street and North to Fannin Street."

Presumably, this resolution would allow people to drink alcohol in open containers in the streets and sidewalks in that area.  And the open containers could be drinks in cups or in bottles or cans that persons bring into the delineated district.

This area is actually in Council District B, represented by Gary Brooks. It is unusual for a council person to introduce a resolution and/or an ordinance affecting an area not within their district.

It is expected that there will be substantial pushback on the resolution as drafted.
