EYESORES ON TEXAS AVENUE ACROSS FROM CADDO COMMON PARK ALONG WITH TEXAS STREET

Caddo Common is the one acre park on Texas Avenue adjacent to the Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC) headquarters in the restored fire station complete with the neon dog and the renovated fire tower.
The park features a space-age looking pavilion and other amenities.  The park represents the only green space in the downtown footprint.

The Caddo Commission donated $1 million for the park and obtained naming rights. Many others contributed to the cost of construction.

On the opposite side of the park are several boarded up storefronts owned by David Nelson.

Here are some pictures:

Needless to say, what was once an attractive artistic endeavor along Texas Avenue is now in many places a picture of decay. To say this appearance is a major negative to Caddo Common Park and landowners along that area of Texas Avenue is a major understatement.

Much like the eyesore of Drayden Dunn's building at 709 Texas Avenue--see pix below--Nelson’s properties need some "love".

In the alternative both properties may fall within the purview of Shreveport's existing Property Standards Ordinances.

Shreveport needs a vacant building/downtown property standards ordinance that Mayor Arceneaux has proposed. Reportedly, major opposition by some council members and property owners have derailed this ordinance.. In the meantime, efforts should be made to try corrective action against Dunn and Nelson, along with other violators, under the existing ordinance.
