DO WE REALLY NEED MORE SECURITY AT SHREVEPORT CITY HALL?

Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor thinks so.

In hushed tones barely audible at the Tues. council meeting Taylor pushed for a Public Safety meeting to discuss enhanced security measures for city hall and the council chambers.

As usual, Taylor overplayed her concerns which seemingly were not merited.

Visitors to the council chambers are checked by Caddo Sheriff Deputies armed with a wand metal detector.

Inside the chambers during the meetings two off duty Shreveport Police officers are in the chambers.

The mayor's second floor office suite has a locked door that requires electronic admission.

There have been no incidents of violence in the chambers or for that matter Government Plaza since Taylor has been on the council. She was appointed as an interim replacement in May 2020.

Reportedly Taylor is always worried about her personal security even though there are no reported incidents of her being threatened. And she certainly has the stature/size to defend herself.

And despite any safety concerns, Taylor is the self-appointed council cop.

Taylor enjoys being at a crime scene, especially with serious crimes even if they are not in her council district. Evidently, she has a mole at the police department, a police scanner and/or a 911 log on her phone.

What measures Taylor wants were not explained at the council meeting.

The elevators at government plaza were disabled a few months back for a day/two days because of an alleged threat.

Caddo deputies had to allow visitors to use the elevators, only after calling the office that the visitors wanted to access.

Thus, entrance to the MPC office, the seventh floor occupied by the Caddo Sheriff, the eighth floor occupied by the Caddo Commission and other offices in the building was cumbersome at best.

Seemingly any additional security measures would need the approval of these government bodies with discussion of any additional costs.

Without a doubt, government officials should ensure the safety of all those working in Government Plaza as well as visitors.

Nonetheless any additional security measures should be well vetted and not based upon Taylor's always ominous statements that can portray a routine summer thunderstorm into a Biblical flooding that floated Noah's ark.

Taylor's security concerns may make good media fodder after the coverage of the July 4 murders becomes stale news, and that is probably part of her motivations.
