If you ever attend and/or stream Shreveport City Council meetings, you know that Jon Glover is always on the front row.
Frequently, Ms. Glover addresses the council asking questions about agenda items. Glover, an African American woman, is always well dressed and very polite in her comments. Additionally, she is not argumentative, and she abides by the three minute rule for speakers.
In the past, councilman James Green has called her out, saying that she and her usual companion Anita Steele whisper and smirk during the meetings. As is his heavy handed way, Green was totally off base in his comments. But such is the way with Reverend Green, a professed man of God.
Yesterday, councilwoman Ursula Bowman had a recognition resolution on the agenda honoring Glover.
The resolution passed on a 5-2 vote, with Green and Taylor voting "NO". Neither Green nor Taylor explained their vote and it is their practice to not respond to inquiries from this writer.
Their "NO" votes were unprecedented in the last 10 plus years. The practice is for ALL the council members to approve recognition resolutions.
Taylor is notorious for sponsoring resolutions of individuals from her district and particularly the MLK area.
Several of these individuals have "qualifications" that could be seriously questioned. The insulting votes of Taylor and Green could lead to similar "NO" votes in the future by other council members.
Both Green and Taylor constantly preach inequities suffered by black people, both now and in the past.
Seemingly, they believe Glover has been exempt from the proclaimed "prejudices" and not worthy of an affirmative vote.
To put in simply, the "NO" votes are an insult to ALL Shreveport citizens, and especially to those living in the districts represented by these two naysayers. So much for civility, respect for others, and cooperation with other council members that both Green and Taylor harp on ad nauseum at council meetings.
Sad, sad, sad.
